failure investigation

Should a component fail before its intended design life, we can investigate the cause of failure.

Our approach considers the suitability of the material of construction and the stresses due to in- service loading of the component.

Stress analysis will show if the service loads cause high local stresses that could become crack initiation sites. Where appropriate, as assessment of the fatigue life will be made.

Where the material is thought to be the cause of failure, our metallurgists and material technologists will examine the failed component and prepare specimens for detailed examination.

Laboratory facilities are available for detailed examination and determination of the mechanical properties of a sample of the material.

Tests for many types of failure mechanism can be undertaken including correct material composition, correct heat treatment, correct welding procedures, fatigue, corrosion and stress corrosion cracking.
